Diana Horsburgh, a founder-member of Friends of the Earth Kuranda, died at her home in Kuranda in the early morning of Saturday, 6th October 2012 surrounded by close family and friends.

Di was an inspiring activist. She’ll be greatly missed by many in the local community – not least by her friends and colleagues in FoE Kuranda.

Her untimely death leaves a large gap in this region’s environment movement.

Environmental organisation Friends of the Earth today released a report about drinking water quality issues in South Australia. The report was compiled from a 9000 page Freedom of Information request from SA Water which covered water quality results between January 2000 and July 2012.

The Victorian Wind Alliance was launched today, with organisers calling on Victorians who support wind energy to use town meetings and social media to make their voices heard.

Victorian Wind Alliance member, Taryn Lane of Hepburn Wind, said, ‘The Victorian Wind Alliance is being formed in response to a call from communities across the state who support more wind energy.

Nuclear Free Alliance celebrates 15 years of resistance

The Australian Nuclear Free Alliance (ANFA) celebrated its 15th anniversary on the weekend of October 5-7 2012 on the land of the Arrernte people in Alice Springs.

The Alliance brings together Aboriginal people, environment, health groups and trade union representatives to discuss the impacts of the nuclear industry on land and communities.

ANFA reaffirmed its opposition to uranium mining, exploration and dumping of radioactive waste on Aboriginal land.

Twice as much water as Cubbie Station’s giant 460 gigalitre (GL) water entitlement is effectively sent overseas every year in the form of irrigated cotton from the Murray-Darling, according to new research released today by Friends of the Earth.

The analysis compiled Australian government data on annual cotton exports and irrigation water use from 2005 to 2011 and calculates the volume of water embodied in Australia’s export cotton crop.

Friends of the Earth is today launching australianmap.net, a new online educational resource which brings together information, photos and videos about more than 50 of Australia's nuclear sites including uranium mines and processing plants, the Lucas Heights research reactor, proposed reactor and dump sites, and British nuclear weapons test sites.

Ted Baillieu’s 2011 planning laws ban wind farms from large parts of Victoria, and just one objector can stop any wind turbine within 2km.

Wind farms create income for farmers and communities. They do not have pollution or health hazards like coal. They share benefits across large sections of the state. We could have new jobs in manufacturing, construction and maintenance here in Victoria if wind projects were allowed to go ahead.

Government walks away from coal closure promise

The Federal Energy Minister Martin Ferguson has announced that the Government is walking away from its promise to shut down some of our dirtiest, oldest coal power stations. Hazelwood, long a target of campaigners in Victoria, was expected to be closed under the 'contract for closure' process.

Yesterday’s announcement by the government to cut the floor price for carbon represents another significant watering down of the environmental and democratic credibility of the scheme according to Friends of the Earth Australia, a leading environmental justice organisation.

“Greg Combet’s announcement represents a major cave in to the interests of polluting industries which have been calling for drastic cuts to the carbon tax,” said Gareth Bryant from Friends of the Earth Sydney.
